Is a glass roof or tiled roof the best option for me?
When choosing between these two popular roof styles, you’ll need to consider a few factors. Imagine how you will be using the space, look at what direction the living space faces, and make a note of your budget. If natural light is very important to you, along with views of your garden, you may choose a glass roof but one with solar control glazing to ensure the space never overheats.
For a feel of a year-round extension, a solid tiled roof is likely your best choice. You can also incorporate full-length glass panels or Velux windows, creating the ideal blend of solid and glass roofing with all their advantages.

Should I be replacing the frames at the same time as the roof?
As your current frames will be just as old as the ageing roof you have decided to replace, you may wish to get them upgraded also. This would be a sensible choice to ensure your living space is transformed into an incredibly energy efficient space.
If you don’t replace the frames, this could hinder the performance of your new thermally efficient roof as heat can escape between the frames, leaving it feeling almost as cold and draughty as before. We will be happy to offer you a deal if you choose to do both at the same time and you’ll be left with a fully transformed conservatory.

Common questions on replacement roofs
Speak to the Yorkshire Windows team for help answering your questions. The answers to many of our typical questions are below.
What do you use to make your replacement tiled roofs?
We manage to install our replacement solid roofs exceptionally fast as a lot of prefabrication is done prior to the system being transported to the relevant home and fitted. Just before the fitting begins, the conservatory will be accurately measured to ensure a seamless process.
As far as how we manufacture the replacement tiled roof, materials employed include a pre-engineered lightweight frame, insulating panels, insulated fire-grade plasterboard, exterior grade plywood and an impenetrable membrane. Various tiled roof finishes are offered, and we’ll do what it takes to make the conservatory look akin to your home.
Can you tell me what a clad over roof is?
Weight: Clad over roofs rely on heavy timber, insulation materials and tiles, which can be too heavy for certain older designs. Things must be kept lightweight and the lightest solid roof systems weigh around 31KG/M ².
Tip: Inform your roof installer to advise you of the total unit weight of the new roof per Sq.M
Fire Safety: A further disadvantage of a ‘clad-over’ system is that it fails to satisfy compliance with current fire safety regulations because of it not being effectively fire tested as a complete roof structure. For that reason, it also doesn’t conform to the relevant part of building regulations. Old conservatories are constructed very differently from one project to the next, so only select components may have been tested. Solid roofs must be classified as AC, AB or AA in accordance with BS476-3.
Is a new roof likely to put a stop to any climate-related problems?
That’s the entire purpose of a solid tiled roof, to prevent conservatories from suffering from overheating in summer and cold draughts in winter. Conservatory designs with polycarbonate roofs are particularly renowned for their poor insulation. Having a solar control glazed roof added to your conservatory space will assure you of a comfortable internal temperature in all weather conditions.
I’m not too clear on what energy rated windows are. What is an ‘A’ rated window?
Right now, an ‘A’ rated is the most energy efficient window available for purchase in the UK, as defined by the BFRC Rating Scheme. Replacement windows all get issued with an energy rating, which also indicates whether or not they meet UK building regulations.
To get your head around Window Energy Ratings, just think of the traffic-light system used for ‘white’ goods, with items like fridges, freezers, washing machines etc. each energy rated. Being aware of the energy efficiency rating of replacement windows will help you make an informed purchase.
What will the price be to replace my existing roof?
The cost will depend on the size of your conservatory. If you require a small roof replacement, pricing starts from around £5,000. For a large conservatory roof, the cost will be around £12,000. The final price will depend on the material used and if you wish to include glazing within the design. Speak to our team about your specific budget.
How long will replacing my existing conservatory roof take?
You will be enjoying your transformed conservatory sooner than you think! Our team works diligently to install a tiled conservatory roof in just a few days, causing minimal disruption to your daily routine.
Is planning permission required when replacing an existing roof?
If you are replacing a roof on an existing conservatory, planning permission won’t be needed, but Building Regulations Control is necessary, and this is something you need evidence of when selling your property. We can advise you on this.
Do I need Building Regulations Approval?
It is extremely important to have Building Regulations Approval from your local authority because it is evidence that the roof has been fully inspected by a government approved building control officer. They will check everything has been installed to the correct standard and is thermally efficiently and structurally sound. If you don’t have this in hand, it can slow down the process of selling your property in the future.
Is finance available to pay for one of your replacement roofs?
We do offer finance, yes! Yorkshire Windows can organise a series of finance packages so that you can spread the cost for convenience (subject to application & status). Finance applications are easy to sort out and can be arranged either in our Doncaster showroom or at your home, wherever you feel most comfortable. It’s our little way of hopefully helping you get a replacement roof without delay.
Once finance is approved, what do I do next?
If you manage to obtain finance from an external lender, get in touch with us as soon as they’ve signed it off. When finance is organised via us, the finance company will notify us both and we’ll give you a call to move things forward.
If I'm refused finance, what happens?
A refusal of finance can occur for several reasons, one of the most common being if you’ve moved several times in recent years. Yorkshire Windows will try and come up with a solution. Trying a finance provider who knows you can often be worth pursuing.
If I apply for finance through Yorkshire Windows, how long will it take to receive a decision?
You could receive an immediate ‘yes’ from the finance company or you may have to wait a few days for a response. Don’t be perturbed by any delay as it may be down to any number of reasons.
