Here's a breakdown of what makes a window energy efficient:
Window frames: UPVC is a popular choice for window frames because it’s a natural insulator. Here at Yorkshire Windows, we install windows which feature multiple chambers (small air compartments) within the frame to create an even greater barrier against heat transfer.
Glazing: Double glazing is still the most common choice for windows, and is what we usually recommend. We offer a variety of glazing options, including low-emissivity (low-e) glass with a special coating to reflect heat back into your home. What makes a window energy efficient
Spacer bars: These separate the panes of glass in a double or triple glazed window. Look for windows with warm edge spacers made from a low heat conductive material to further reduce heat transfer.
Gas filling: The space between the panes of glass can be filled with air, argon, or krypton gas. Argon and krypton are better insulators than air.
Understanding energy ratings
The British Fenestration Ratings Council (BFRC) calculates a window’s energy rating based on three key factors:
- U-value: This measures heat loss. The lower the U-value, the better the insulation.
- Solar heat gain (G Value): This measures how much heat from the sun the window allows in.
- Air leakage rate: This measures how much air leaks through the window.
Windows are given a Window Energy Rating (WER) based on these factors. The WER scale runs from A++ (most efficient) to G (least efficient). The rating is displayed on a label similar to those found on appliances.
